Attachments Book Review
Rating: 3.5/5
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Genre: Romance and Humor
Pages: 354
The plan wasn’t to read a rom-com (esp. after the gazillion rom-com books and movies I’ve managed to read/watch this year). The idea was to read something informational and serious and possibly intelligent. Not that I am saying rom-coms aren’t intelligent. Humor is a lot of work and ticking people’s funny bones requires wits and intellect of the highest level. What I am trying to say is that I needed something hardcore to talk about on my next date with my long time crush (who happens to be a Machine Learning expert).
But then the unthinkable happened. I was shopping on Amazon and this book, out of nowhere, just flashed in front of my eyes. Their recommendation algorithm must have by now figured out my weakness for this genre. Besides, I love Rainbow Rowell for all the wonderful characters that she creates and the touching moments that happen in her books. And so, in that one whimsical moment, I bought Attachments.
Attachments : Book Review
The book is funny, cute and light hearted. I just loved the whole idea of falling for a person for their mind and words even before seeing them. The idea of falling for a person for who they are at the core of their heart than for the color of their eyes. The love in it’s purest form , not dominated by carnal desires. The idea of loving the soul of a person before laying a finger on them. (Okay, I can go on and on, so will puposefully stop rambling.)
It’s very romantic to meet the person of your dreams in a way you are least expecting. And that is the most endearing thing about the plot. That said, I anyway don’t look at the story that much esp. when it comes to this genre. What is essential is how it makes me feel. And I feel hopeful, complacent and nice after reading this one. Three things that I really liked about the book are:
- The lives of all the people seem very real and believable. Juxtaposition of good moments with bad experiences like it is in real life.
- More than just romance, this book explores several kinds of bonds that we share with various people in our lives.
- Almost all characters are likeable and decent (Barring two. They are the epitome of who not to be and what not to date). And who would not want to meet kind and nice people in reel life at least. (In real life, things are a bit complicated whether you want it or not, isn’t it?)
P.S. I guess this book comes in handy for those who are stuck with unpleasant partners in not so healthy relationships and can’t get out of it. You’ll know what I mean when you read it.
